APPLYING THE ICC CODES TO CANNABIS FACILITIES IN VERMONT

Cannabis facilities are growing quickly in Vermont, and they present special and significant challenges for safe construction for cultivation, processing, and sales. This year we will have an expert, Steve Thomas of the International Code Council, explain how to apply the range of ICC codes to Vermont projects, as well as two DFS marshals – Landon Wheeler and Ben Moffatt -- to explain exceptions and adaptions for Vermont’s building code. Both the course content and the registration of attendees will be preference to Vermont officials, builders and designers. Attendance is limited to 50 participants. This is BSA-VT’s first online course, and we will make sure participants can easily ask questions.

Course Description and Objectives

Topics in this course include building, fire, mechanical, plumbing, energy, and electrical code requirements, different types of facilities and a checklist for plan review inspection.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe different types of cannabis facilities, including cultivation, growing, extraction, bakeries/cooking, dispensaries, laboratories, grow supply stores, mixed uses.

  • Identify Building, Fire, Mechanical, Plumbing, Energy, Electrical code requirements for all the various cannabis facilities.

  • Discuss hazards that exist in single-family residences that involve the growth, distribution and processing of cannabis to protect the health, safety and welfare of building occupants.

  • Employ a checklist to properly inspect various cannabis facilities to ensure code compliance and ensure the health, safety and welfare of all building occupants.

Each participant will receive a digital textbook for the course. If you prefer instead a hard copy of the textbook, it can be mailed to you after the course for an additional $10.

PRESENTER:

Steve Thomas has over thirty years of experience in working with building codes including plan reviews, inspections and administration. His firm, founded in 1999, provides building code consulting services for governmental agencies and architecture firms, as well as educational seminars on buildings codes. Steve has served on several ICBO committees and recently served as the Chairman of the ICC Means of Egress Code Development Committee. He currently serves on the ICC Codes & Standards Committee. He is also the author of the book, Building Codes Basics, Based on the 2009 & 2012 IBC, and the Building Code Essentials based on the 2015 IBC, all available from ICC. He has taught building code classes for more than 25 years.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS:

6 LU's for AIA (with HSW)

REGISTRATION:

Registration is $50 for Vermont building officials and $60 for all other VT-based participants. The fee includes a digital textbook, 6 CE credits, and a 1-year membership in the ICC Building Safety Association of Vermont. Out of state registration is $75 (including building officials), does not include membership in BSA-VT.
